Course de Satin

The Satin Race consists of a ritual equestrian competition where riders race bareback for a symbolic silk prize. Historically, this event dates back to 1529, making it one of the oldest horse races in Europe still in activity. It highlights the regional culture through the display of Camargue horsemanship and the presence of the Queen of Arles. Participants can observe branding demonstrations and high-speed equestrian skills in the wild landscape of the manade. This gathering serves as a vital social link for the manadiers and the guardian community of the Rhone delta. For researchers, it provides a living link to medieval athletic competitions and local biodiversity management through grazing. The race is dedicated to the preservation of the equestrian and cultural legacy of the Camargue.
