The Christianization of Brittany is the subject of this film-lecture: migrants out of Cornwall, Wales, Ireland and Scotland, and the Celtic form of worship they inspired. The account passes magical fountains and majestic cathedrals, and the many churches and chapels of the region. The famous enclosures are what that history left standing in the Breton landscape. Jules Gros, une vie à l’écoute du breton populaire
Daniel Giraudon and Francis Favereau sit down at the Domaine départemental de la Roche-Jagu to talk about Jules Gros. He gave much of a very long life to noting the Breton spoken around him in Trégor, one turn of phrase at a time. The result, the monumental Trésor du breton parlé, is why his name still circulates among speakers of the language. The man who emerges from their recollections is a polyglot and a collector of the vernacular.
Livre & Mer, salon du livre maritime de Concarneau
The Festival Livre & Mer gathers the authors of the sea at the complexe sportif du Porzou in Concarneau, for its forty-first edition. Novelists, scientists, historians, comic-book authors and sailors meet readers across one large maritime bookshop. Lectures and round tables run beside the stands. Three prizes are handed out, led by the Prix Livre&Mer Henri Quéffelec, and this edition carries the label 400 ans de la marine.
Anatole Le Braz, with Hussön and Lefondeur
An evening given to Anatole Le Braz, his work and his legacy. Xavier Hussön, who illustrated the temporary exhibition shown alongside, sits with the novelist Gérard Lefondeur, who brings the writer back through his investigations. They take in the writer, the collector and the Brittany he described, drawing on archives, contemporary art and the imagination. The Cercle Celtique de Malestroit performs at the close, and admission is free.
Island music at the Pointe du Raz
ID-Îles brings an afternoon on music and island life to the Maison de site de la Pointe du Raz. Nina Montagné’s documentary « Ouessant, île sera une fanfare », on that island’s brass band, opens it, followed by the music video « Dec’h ». Louis Brigand, a geography professor who specialises in islands, then gives an illustrated lecture. Michel Colleu, a collector of traditional maritime cultures, joins the filmmakers afterwards.
La musique dans l’Antiquité celtique
Julian Cuvilliez consacre cette conférence à ce que l’on sait de la musique des Celtes et aux instruments dont jouaient les Gaulois. Il projette en 3D des artefacts rarement montrés et fait sonner des instruments reconstitués par l’archéologie expérimentale. Parmi les pièces commentées, le buste du Barde à la lyre et les monnaies du trésor des Baïocasses. Un temps de rencontre et d’échanges prolonge la séance.
Conférence-concert de Brieg Guerveno et Maïlys Princé
The Micro-folie at Ploërmel puts a talk and a concert in one evening at Les Carmélites. Maïlys Princé, a Breton content creator from the area, opens on the cultures and languages of Brittany as social media carry them, and on what digital mediation does to intangible heritage. The singer Brieg Guerveno then takes up the question « Pourquoi chanter en langue minorisée ? ». His concert of new work in Breton closes the night.
L’Abri des Temps: a village bookshop at Moncontour
L’Abri des Temps is a general bookshop at Moncontour, open for the Semaines du Tourisme Économique et des Savoir-Faire. Its booksellers walk visitors through the premises and the way the shop is run. The stock mixes new and second-hand, with shelves built up in sciences humaines, nature, jardin and paysage, and a choice shaped by rural life, traditions and history. What the hour turns on is how that holds in a village of 800.
Festival du Livre en Bretagne in Carhaix
Most of Brittany’s publishing houses, about a hundred, set up stands alongside close to three hundred authors. The fair is run by the Centre culturel breton Egin, and publishers time their main releases to it, which makes Carhaix the pivot of the Breton literary season. Roundtables and screenings run in French, in Brezhoneg and in Kabyle. The bill includes a roundtable on contemporary Breton literature and a tribute to the musician Soïg Sibéril.
Dinardais de cœur : Alain Colas, navigateur solitaire
A lecture, a film and a discussion make up the Histoire & Patrimoine session in Dinard devoted to the solo ocean racer Alain Colas, who disappeared at sea during the first Route du Rhum forty-eight years ago. The film is Rêves d’Océan, by Eric Le Seney, who is present for the screening. Jean-François Colas, the navigator’s younger brother and once a crewmate of his, sits in on it too. Admission is free.
