Pardon de la Chapelle de la Joie in Penmarch joins religious procession, Bigouden costume and maritime thanksgiving. The celebration grew between the world wars and was painted by artists such as Mathurin Méheut and Lucien Simon, who helped fix its image in regional memory. Sailors gather to thank the Virgin for protection, with blessing of the sea and mass keeping the chapel tied to fishing life.
