Exposition ‘YS’ in Guimiliau: Celtic Legend

The “YS” exhibition at the Centre d’interprétation Les Enclos in Guimiliau presents an engaging showcase of works by Benjamin Deroche. This dual exhibition features original photographic prints and oils on canvas, along with reproductions along a photographic trail through the Landivisiau region. Deroche explores the atmospheric Celtic legend of Ys, weaving narratives from sources like Émile Souvestre’s *Foyer Breton*, Théodore de la Villamarqué’s *Barzaz Breiz*, and Charles Guyot’s adaptations into a striking visual experience. The exhibition travels from Douarnenez to the scenic landscapes of Kervel, highlighting communities such as Quimper and Landévennec. Employing various techniques—including a blend of oil painting and photography—he creates a distinct representation of the legend through a combination of color, black-and-white images, and varying focal methods, resulting in a style of “atmospheric realism.” Philippe Le Guillou’s texts enhance the narrative of YS, which are integrated within the display. This project evolved from a residency at the Port-musée de Douarnenez in 2022 and was adapted for presentation in 2026, following an earlier showcase at the Kiosque in Vannes. Visitors can explore the exhibition from March to June and September on weekdays, with extended hours in July and August to welcome a larger audience, celebrating both the rich heritage of Brittany and contemporary artistic creativity.
