A2c and RegArts include Sofia Coppola’s Marie-Antoinette in a festival programme focused on women and cinema. Kirsten Dunst plays the Austrian archduchess sent to France to marry the future Louis XVI, with Jason Schwartzman appearing as the dauphin who becomes king. The film treats its subject freely, following the young royal’s passage from Vienna to Versailles and the pressures surrounding marriage, court life and succession. Coppola’s production competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and received an award from the French Ministry of Education. Presented at the Megarama cinema in Chalon-sur-Saône, the screening places a modern interpretation of a prominent European woman within a regional cultural programme, connecting historical biography, performance and film authorship for local audiences.
