Salins Fire of 1825: A Historical Exhibition

La Grande Saline hosts a significant temporary exhibition focusing on the devastating fire that ravaged Salins-les-Bains on July 27, 1825. Within just two days, the blaze destroyed over 400 homes, leaving 726 families displaced and marking a pivotal moment in the town’s history. This exhibition provides a comprehensive retrospective on the causes, consequences, and the community’s response. Visitors will journey through various sections that cover the conditions before the fire, the inferno itself, and the following relief efforts. The display features poignant artifacts, engravings, and firsthand accounts from those affected. Among the items showcased are a hand pump from the local fire museum, melted remnants from the fire, and reproductions of artwork by celebrated artists that contributed to the town’s rebuilding. The exhibit highlights the national solidarity that emerged, with aid rolling in from across the country to assist in recovery efforts. It also reflects how Salins’ urban landscape has been permanently altered by the tragedy, adhering to architectural standards that still hold today. Join us at La Grande Saline to witness this crucial piece of history and to appreciate the resilience of Salins and its residents over the last two centuries.
