Châteauroux George Sand Letter Reading

At Bibliothèque Saint-Jean, staged letters to Musset, Hugo and Flaubert reveal George Sand’s intimate voice and the roots of her fiction.

About this event

At Bibliothèque Saint-Jean, George Sand’s vast correspondence becomes living theatre instead of a collection of private documents. Musset and Flaubert appear alongside Victor Hugo, Michel de Bourges and Maurice Sand, revealing affection, disagreement and artistic companionship. The reading uses those relationships to approach Sand’s inner life and the development of her fiction. Indiana and La Mare au Diable, together with La petite Fadette, provide familiar reference points, but the letters take center stage as a major work in their own right. Their changes of tone and addressee give the performers a naturally dramatic score. For Châteauroux audiences, the piece replaces a fixed literary portrait with a writer speaking across a remarkable network of family, friendship and intellectual debate.
