The exhibition “Mystification – Architecture et cinéma, la quête de l’illusion” examines the relationship between architecture and cinema at the Saline Royale in Arc-et-Senans. In the first room, the history of trompe-l’oeil in architecture, tracing its evolution from ancient landmarks like the Parthenon to contemporary architectural marvels. Simultaneously, a chronological overview of cinema reveals how early special effects captivated audiences by employing similar techniques. The second room focuses on how iconic locations have been transformed for the screen, featuring visuals of the Royal Salt Works and the Trevi Fountain in films. The third room illustrates the blending of virtual and real worlds, presenting how designed spaces in movies create narratives that intertwine fiction with reality. Visitors will encounter innovative methods that have recently influenced the film industry. The fourth room examines how animated films have shaped modern architectural visions, highlighting works like “La Planète sauvage” and “2001: A Space Odyssey,” which envision future spaces. The exhibition culminates in room five with reflections on humanity’s continuous search for illusion, presenting how both art forms challenge our understanding of reality. A highlight includes reconstructed sets from Jean Cocteau’s “Beauty and the Beast,” providing an in a basement space designed by Juan Pablo Molyneux.
