Jean-Claude Sandrier’s lecture George Sand, le parti du peuple examines the writer as a politically engaged and humanist figure. Her defence of freedom, justice and equality provides the central frame, linking literary authority with public positions in a society that denied women full civil recognition. Sandrier approaches that commitment alongside Sand’s artistic world, showing that social thought and creative work were not separate parts of her life. The conference follows an exhibition devoted to three exceptional women connected with Jean-Michel Athomas, giving the discussion an additional focus on femininity and recognition. In Sancerre, the event creates space for exchange and presents Sand as a complex political figure, never an untouchable monument. It asks what her choices, writing and advocacy reveal about speaking for the people while asserting an independent female voice.
