At the Maison des Traditions in Chassignolles, museum objects are reconsidered through George Sand’s attentive writing on rural society. Deeply familiar with peasant life, she recorded customs, domestic practices and working knowledge, sometimes placing them within her novels and sometimes addressing them directly in newspaper articles. The exhibition brings a selection from the museum together with pieces from private collections, allowing material culture and literary observation to illuminate each other. Everyday objects become clues to the lives, gestures and skills that Sand sought to preserve in words. The result connects Berry’s tangible heritage with a writer who treated country people as complex subjects with agency and depth in her portrait of rural Berry.
