L’âme musicale de George Sand is a concert-reading created by the Paris Mozart Orchestra under the artistic direction of Claire Gibault around the writer’s reflections on music. Narrator Suliane Brahim and mezzo-soprano Margaux Poguet carry Sand’s texts and letters into a staged orchestral dialogue, accompanied by projected photographs from FLORE. Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony meets a tribute to Pauline Viardot and Philippe Macé’s Reflets du Berry for bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy and orchestra. François Lazarevitch and Anne-Lise Foy bring those traditional Berry instruments into the ensemble’s sound world. At the Maison de la Culture in Bourges, literature, Romantic repertoire and regional music illuminate the breadth of Sand’s artistic imagination. The programme gives equal seriousness to spoken language, orchestral colour and the folk timbres of her home territory.
